How to convert PDF to DWG without AutoCAD

You have a PDF drawing, someone needs a DWG, and there is no AutoCAD on your machine. That is common: contractors, homeowners and students often get asked for a DWG they have never had to make. Here is what you can do, depending on the PDF.

If the PDF came out of a CAD program

Zoom in on it. Sharp lines and selectable text mean a vector PDF. Its lines are real geometry, so online PDF to DWG converters can usually rebuild them into a DWG with no AutoCAD involved. Upload, download, done.

Two things to check afterwards. Text often comes back as separate words or even single letters, and arcs are sometimes broken into many short lines. Neither matters if you only need to measure; both matter if you plan to edit the drawing.

If the PDF is a scan or a photo

A converter has nothing to work with: it will hand back an empty DWG or the scan stuck inside one as a picture. You need either raster-to-vector software, which traces the pixels, or a service that reads the drawing and redraws it.

For floor plans and other building drawings Horezmi does the second: it reads the scan and draws a clean DWG with walls, openings, rooms and dimensions, in the browser, with no CAD program needed on your side. It also gives you a PDF sheet to scale, so you can print or send the result straight away.

How to open and check a DWG for free

You don't need AutoCAD to look at the result. Autodesk's own DWG TrueView is a free viewer that opens and measures DWG files. Free CAD programs such as LibreCAD open the DXF version of the same drawing. And most online converters and services, Horezmi included, show you the drawing in the browser before you download anything.

Things to watch out for

  • Scale: a vector PDF keeps it, a scan has to be scaled by a known dimension. Measure one long wall before you trust the file.
  • Units: a US plan should come back in feet and inches, a European one in millimetres. Check the drawing units, not just the numbers.
  • Layers: a converted vector PDF keeps whatever layers the PDF had, often none. A redrawn plan comes with walls, doors, windows, text and dimensions on separate layers.
  • Privacy: you are uploading someone's drawing. Use a service that says who sees the files and deletes them on request.

Questions

Is there a free way to convert PDF to DWG?

For vector PDFs, yes: free online converters handle most of them. For scans the free options trace pixels and need a lot of cleanup. Horezmi gives $5 of free drawings when you sign in, enough for several house plans.

Can I edit the DWG without AutoCAD?

Yes, in any CAD program that reads DWG or DXF, including free ones for simple edits. With Horezmi you can also change the drawing in words before you download it.
